Used worldwide, life expectancy at birth is a measure of a population's state of general health. Life expectancy at birth is often compared to health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE) at birth to assess whether the added years of life are spent in good health.
The Canadian life expectancy at birth was 81.1 years in 2009. It has increased steadily since 1979, when it was 74.9 years.

In 2009, life expectancy at birth was 78.8 years for men and 83.3 years for women. In 1979, women were expected to live 7.4 years longer than men. This difference has narrowed over time and was 4.5 years in 2009.

Life expectancy at birth for Registered Indians increased from 60.9 years to 70.4 years for men, and from 68.0 years to 75.5 years for women between 1980 and 2001. Although it is improving, life expectancy for Registered Indians still lags behind that of the general Canadian population.

In 2009, life expectancy at birth ranged from 75.1 years in the Territories (Yukon, the Nortwest Territories and Nunavut) to 81.7 years in British Columbia. Life expectancy at birth was higher in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia than the national average.

In 2009 for the G7 countries, Japan had the highest life expectancy at birth (83.0 years) while the United States had the lowest (78.5 years). Canada was tied with France for the third highest life expectancy at birth (81.1 years).

In 2007, men were expected to spend 88.0% (68.9 years) of their life in good health, compared with 85.8% (71.2 years) for women. Although women had higher life expectancy, men were expected to spend a higher proportion of their life in good health.
