Indicators of Well-being in Canada

Definition — Weekly Earnings

The weekly earnings indicator shows the average weekly earnings for employed persons. It takes into account both full- and part-time employees. Earnings include wages/salaries, tips, commissions and bonuses before taxes and other deductions.

Expanded Definition and Methodology

Information is collected on the usual wages or salary of employees at their main job. Respondents are asked to report their wage/salary before taxes and other deductions, and include tips, commissions and bonuses. Weekly and hourly wages/salary are calculated in conjunction with usual paid work hours per week.

To factor in inflation when comparing weekly earnings across time, all earnings estimates are expressed in constant 2012 dollars. This allows for comparisons in real terms.
